#centralamerica is always a great address when it comes to experiencing an #adventurous time. Guatemala is not yet too strongly developed for tourism, but offers a sufficient and safe infrastructure for backpacking. The country, which borders on Mexico, will fascinate you from the first moment on and there are many reasons for that! Mainly responsible for this is the colorful mixture of experiences: You'll find dense #rainforests teeming with life, impressive #mayanruins like you've never seen before, and huge #volcanoes that will make an eruption an unforgettable natural spectacle!

The country is characterized by a deeply divided population of indigenous people and Latinos. In addition to a moving #history and the strong influences of various Mayan cultures to this day, nature in #guatemala is unique and knows how to make you #speechless.

Flores

The location directly at Lake Petén-Itza is picturesque and from Flores you can perfectly organize an excursion to the Mayan ruins of #tikal. How do you describe a ruined city that suddenly appears out of nowhere in the jungle and immediately takes your breath away? No words can reflect this moment, no matter how hard we try. The #mayatemples are huge and the big square is the highlight of your discovery tour! If you then wander further through the jungle in search of more temples, while the #monkeys roar on the trees and huge lizards sit at the roadside, you feel like in a long forgotten world!

Rio Dulce

You won't experience much adventure there, but it is very quiet, #relaxing and #idyllic. Rio Dulce is a bit remote, but is the perfect place for those who want to experience a little #jungle feeling. The Caribbean flair there distinguishes Rio Dulce strongly from the other destinations.

San Augustin Lanquin

Another highlight not to be missed in Guatemala is the Semuc Champey nature pools where you can swim! But it's not just the pools that are the adventure, it's the whole region. The journey to Semuc Champey is adventurous, long and bumpy. But don't miss this magical place! Turquoise #naturalpools and unlimited opportunities for #adventure await you here. You should find accommodation in Lanquin as the base camp for your adventure. From this village you have several possibilities to reach the #nature reserve.

Lago Atitlan

Around the Lago de Atitlán there are numerous volcanoes that can be visited in more or less demanding #hikes. Enjoy the fantastic weather and the sunbeams on the lake shore, discover the lake on a kayak tour and let yourself be overwhelmed by the #unique view.

Our tip: Climb the Nariz del Indio at sunrise.

Acatenango

Imagine walking up to a #volcano, climbing several metres in altitude and being rewarded with a magnificent view of the still active volcano El Fuego, which erupts regularly! You can stay overnight at the base camp on the Acatenango volcano and watch the eruption of the neighbouring volcano from there!

You can only experience such a natural spectacle in a few places and for this reason you must not miss the ascent of the Acatenango volcano under any circumstances during your Guatemala trip.

Antigua Guatemala

Colourful #colonial houses and a volcanic frame. #antigua is probably the epicentre of tourism in Guatemala. Many expats have settled in Antigua and therefore the city has an international flair. This can also be seen in the restaurant scene, which is surprisingly varied.

Things to know about Guatemala

Best travel time:  February-May, October-November. Summer is always the rainy season in Guatemala.

Language: Spanish is the official language, with English it becomes difficult! It is best to acquire basic knowledge of Spanish at an early stage.

This is how much time you should plan: You can visit the highlights in Guatemala in two weeks without any problems. Now you have to ask yourself if it is enough for you to fly over the Atlantic for "only" two weeks. We would generally recommend that you plan at least three weeks. During this time you can set a more comfortable pace and get more involved with the country!

Currency: Guatemalan Quetzal, Guatemala is generally a very cheap travel destination.

Transport: Tourist shuttle (small vans or buses) depart daily from all major spots. Many accommodations organize such transport. These tourist buses are a very safe means of transport.

You will love Guatemala - we promise you that! There are not many countries in the world where you can experience so many extraordinary #adventures.
