Wellington, New Zealnad’s capital, may not be the country’s most known city but definitely worth a visit! With historical and cultural meaning, it has lots to offer like different museums, top rated restaurants and bars and activities for the whole family! In this guide we will give you some highlights for what to do and see during your stay!

Museums

Are you interested in New Zealand's origin and culture? Then, the Te Papa Tongarewa Museum is the perfect museum! Everything you need to know about its History, Art, Maori, Pacific and Natural Environment! The museum is a world known tourist attraction and all the exhibitions are presented in an interactive and fun way for the visitor! The most popular exhibition is the Mana Whenua exhibition, that displays the history of the Maori and some of their art and treasures. And besides, there is no entrance fee. Another museum that is also worth a stop, is the "Museum of Wellington City and Sea”. It is located in a preserved historic building that was once one of the city's early department stores and informs you about the surrounding sea and how Wellington became what it is today!

The Beehive and Parliament Building

The Beehive is the nickname of the executive wing of the Parliament and can be visited next to the Edwardian Parliament Buildings. Here you can learn about New Zealand’s Parliament and government from past eras and nowadays. You will also learn about art works and the architecture of the buildings.

Zealandia Sanctuary

This wildlife sanctuary holds forty different bird species like tūī, kākā and kererū, most of them have only been found here. And obviously also Kiwis! You can also find many different reptile species and plants in this ecosanctuary. Their goal is to reconstruct the ecosystem how it used to be once before the humans arrived and to protect the animals and endangered species! If you love nature and want to find out more about New Zealand’s unique wildlife than this sanctuary is the place for you to go to!

Food

Wellington is known for its many and great culinary options. But remember, like in other places in New Zealand its restaurants are quite expensive. There are a lot of options depending what you are looking for! The best places to go to are next at the Harbour or on Cuba Street. And how about afterwards going for a walk to a garden or next to the sea, like the Botanical Garden or the Waterfront? New Zealands or how they would say, Kiwis, love their good coffee... therefore Wellington offers many cute cafés. The top-rated restaurants are Jano Bistro, Ortega, etc...

Cable Cars

Take a ride on the well-known Cable Car. Since 1902 they have been going up the hill of Kelburn. It is not only a great way to get up the hill to some of Wellingtons' main tourist attractions but also offers you a unique view over the whole city and the sea next to it! The ride starts at Lambton Quay and within a few minutes you get to Kelburn where you can also find the Botanic Garden next to it!
